A Brisbane, Australia man was left with a massive inch-wide hole burned into his cranium after applying black salve ointment to treat skin cancer.
The 55-year-old had been applying the salve for four months and by the time he arrived at 
Princess Alexandra Emergency Department for professional treatment, he told the 
doctors that he had been using strong narcotic analgesic to kill the pain.
The ointment is made from bloodroot which contains sanguinarine, is typically mixed with 
zinc chloride, combining to create a sweet-smelling, but corrosive ointment.
Applied topically, it is often used to treat conditions as diverse as moles, scars and even 
skin cancer. The ointment can destroy skin tissue, leaving conspicuous black scars, 
which later fall off.
